Tuition

I can teach Students on a weekly basis, every other week, and as one off lessons for players who just want to check their technique isn't going astray.
Whether you see me on a regular basis or as an when you need advice, you can decide what we cover in each session.

I prefer my students to arrive knowing what they want to work on. If you're not sure, I'll listen to you play the drums, we'll talk about what your playing at the moment and go from there.

If you are working on Grades and need some extra help we can arrange a series of lessons dedicated to this.

Home visits can be aranged for people living in the Exeter area, but the majority of my lessons take place at the Academy of Music and Sound in Exeter.

Tuition is £12.50 for half an hour and £25 for an hour. Discounts are available for short courses of 10 lessons arranged in advance.

Beginners:

'What will I learn?'

It doesn't matter if you have never picked up a pair of drum sticks before, or how old you are. Anyone can have a go!

You'll start with the basics, how to hold the sticks, playing basic beats and rhythms.
Bring in your favourite CD and learn to groove along to your favourite tracks. If you just want to learn some simple beats to jam with your freinds thats not a problem. I won't make you sign up for any length of time.

What if I haven't got a Drum Kit?

It doesn't matter! Don't go buying a drum kit unless you've tried it out first. If you want to get a kit, I'm more than happy to advise you.

Experienced players:

'what do you want to improve/work on?'

I can offer advice and exercises to improve hand technique, foot technique, bass drum control, coordination, speed, endurance, power, time keeping, and groove.

We can work on :

  • Bass Drum Technique: work on sound quality and control, speed, endurance, power, 'heel toe' , 'foot stroke' and 'leg stroke' techniques.
  • Hand technique: 'Moeller' , using the rebound of the stick, control, speed, endurance, looking at different grips, sticking patterns, creativity.
  • Coordination: 3-way and 4-way coordination exercises and grooves. Independance exercises. Creativity
  • Time keeping and Groove: The most important element of Drumming. Work on time keeping, using a metronome, playing to a click track, developing your groove.
  • Music Reading and General Musicianship: If you want to learn to read music, I can teach you. It's true that being able to read music is not essential, but it is very helpful, especially when learning an instrument, and communicating your ideas with other musicians.
