About Jay
Jay Scott - Drum Tutor @ Exeter Academy
Jay started studying music at the age of 11, having trumpet lessons at primary school. Soon after this he picked up the drum sticks, playing the side drum in a marching band, before moving onto the drum kit.
Jay was playing concerts to large audiences from a young age, and soon after playing drums in a school concert, he began playing in pubs around Portsmouth with local rock bands. By the time he went to college, Jay had already performed at the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, as well as completing two grade eight performance exams - Trumpet and Drum Kit.
After A-levels, Jay went on to study music at the University of Huddersfield where he gained a BA(Hons) in Music with Theatre Studies. It was here that Jay began performing with a more diverse range of musicians, playing Jazz, Funk, Fusion and some Experimental music.
After Uni Jay performed at the Glastonbury Festival with a Funk/Jazz Quintet. Jay moved to Exeter after this and began performing with local funk/soul bands at small festivals in Devon. Jay then moved to London to study on the Master Performance Course at Drumtech, where he graduated with the 'Most Improved Player' award.
Moving back to Devon after this, Jay began teaching privately and at the Academy. Jay now writes and performs with local artist Laura Dugmore and has since performed at festivals and venues across Devon, and on BBC radio.
